The
author uses this guidebook of the San Rafael Swell to take you through many
canyons and special places of interest. He takes you to old copper and uranium
mines and tells you of the riches and heartbreaks the prospectors had while
giving some history of the area. He gives you a map for each trip or loop
(thanks to Steven Williams) and a photo on most of the pages. This book
is a combination of the original manuscript and Williams' Wanderings written
for the Emery County Progress (local newspaper) by my wife Terry Lyn and
myself.
This
book has been written to assist the novice in getting around to see some
of the most beautiful scenery in the world, and to explore the canyons and
trails. At the beginning of each chapter will be a symbol specifying the
mode of travel possible for each tour. When this book was first published
in 1986 ATV's were not yet a popular mode of transportation for back-country
travel. Now, ATV's are a favorite way to travel to see this beautiful country.
The
early histories gathered by Owen McClenahan are told by the men who were
there. Some of these histories were obtained over a period of thirty-five
years from interviews with older people who lived at that time and through
newspaper articles.
A San Rafael Geological Formation Chart is given at the
end of the book to help the novice and, because the San Rafael Swell is
a little different, it will also help the informed.
